Reiwa

The shrine's official name, Musashino ni Masu Uruwashiki Yamato no Miyashiro, was named by the renowned scholar of Japanese literature, Prof. Susumu Nakanishi, who is widely understood to be the creator of the era name "Reiwa".
"Reiwa signifies 'Uruwashiki Yamato'—the exquisite beauty of Japan. The character 'Rei' (令), as used in terms like 'Reijō' (dignified daughter) or 'Reisoku' (dignified son), represents a state of refined and harmonious beauty. It is an elegant, structured beauty born from self-discipline and noble living. This is the nuance I feel in 'Rei,' and I believe the traditional Japanese word 'Uruwashii' captures it best."
— Prof. Susumu Nakanishi
During August, we are offering a special Goshuin. It features the calligraphy "Reiwashiku Wa ni Ikiru" (Living Gracefully in Harmony), penned by Prof. Nakanishi on May 1, 2019, the very first day of the Reiwa era.
Dr. Nakanishi poured his heart into this calligraphy, praying for us to live with grace and harmony, and for people all across the world to live in bright, peaceful days. We hope you will receive this Goshuin—a true prayer for peace itself—as a cherished memento of your visit.
